Our story

Our studio is a space of quiet intention, where we translate the heritage of craftsmanship into a contemporary language. Led by Kristina Šipulová Plavčanová, we don’t just design garments; we build them from the yarn up. By working with vintage linen, raw silk, and hand-spun fibers, we honor a rhythm of production that is patient, human, and zero-waste. Every piece that leaves our studio is a result of a dialogue between the designer’s vision and the weaver’s hand—a wearable archive made to live for generations.

A craft carried through generations

Long before SIPULOVA existed, craft was already part of Kristina’s family story. Her grandmother learned to weave from her own grandmother in the 19th century, in a small rural cottage where making things by hand was simply part of everyday life.

Skills were not written down or formalised. They were passed quietly from one generation to the next — through observation, repetition and care. This created a family heritage of craftsmanship that would later become one of the foundations of Kristina’s work.

Garments made to last

Kristina grew up surrounded by textiles that already carried history. Her mother collected and preserved traditional folk garments and old linen fabrics, many of them passed through several generations of the family.

What stayed with Kristina was not only their beauty, but their endurance. Decades later, the materials remained remarkably strong, often becoming softer and more beautiful with time.

It formed an early understanding that a garment can be more than something worn for a season. When it is made well, it can become part of a family story.

Learning the language of textiles

That early fascination with material eventually became Kristina’s profession. She studied textile design in Bratislava and Oslo, learning to understand cloth not only as a surface, but as a structure — something shaped by fibre, construction, technique and time.

Her path later took her into renowned fashion and textile studios working with some of the world’s leading luxury houses, including Chanel. She subsequently taught at the International Fashion Academy in Paris.

These experiences introduced her to a different world of craftsmanship: exacting standards, experimentation and uncompromising attention to detail. Yet they also brought her closer to the values she had known since childhood.

Studio was born

In 2019, Kristina founded her own studio.

The intention was not simply to create another fashion label, but to bring together the different parts of her journey: traditional craftsmanship, natural materials, and contemporary design.

SIPULOVA began with a simple ambition — to make exceptional garments with enough integrity to be worn for many years and, perhaps, one day passed on.

A quiet recognition

Over time, the work began to travel further than Kristina had imagined.

SIPULOVA has been discovered and featured by publications including Vogue, ELLE Decoration, Konfekt, Monocle, The Lissome and Selvedge, each drawn to different aspects of the same story: craftsmanship, material, cultural memory and a slower approach to making clothes.

The recognition has been meaningful, but the principle behind the studio has remained unchanged — to make thoughtfully, in small quantities, and with respect for the material and the people who work with it.
